feature request: include version number in package filenames

Postby jdrogers » Wed Jan 04, 2017 4:56 pm

Hi All,

I just ran into a problem where I was unable to identify the version of the bfmatlab installed on a system. In most open source packages I have used, the version is is part of the filename for the archive, and this is the case for the octave package. However, this is not included for the bfmatlab.zip package or the bftools.zip. Is there any reason these could not include the version?

Thanks,
JDR

Hi JDR,

thanks for the RFE. Adding a version suffix to the various bundles is completely sensible and definitely part of our roadmap. As initially discussed in https://github.com/openmicroscopy/bioformats/pull/2581, the major blocker are the number of locations that need to be reviewed and updated notably in terms of documentation to document the renaming.

As this package renaming will preferably be carried out in a minor/major version release, would the addition of a NEWS file to the MATLAB bundle similarly to what was done in https://github.com/openmicroscopy/bioformats/pull/2584 for the command-line tools be an acceptable workaround to identify the version of the bfmatlab installed on a system in the meantime?

Best,
Sebastien
