OMERO Virtual Appliance extremely slow

Hi OME Team,

For the first view tests I did with omero I actually found it extremely useful. Suddenly, I encountered a problem. I updated from VirtualBox 4.2.6 to 4.2.8 and suddenly Omero 4.4.6 reacts extremely slow for every possible action. only selecting an image and loading the image information takes 30 sec. for a 3 channel image 512x512px. opening an image in the viewer or trying to make a Roi figure is nearly impossible, timewise.

I uninstalled everything and reinstalled VirtualBox 4.2.6 and imported the ova file from scratch but I can't get rid of the slow performance. I tried to assign more memory and/or CPUs to the appliance but nothing worked out.

I actually wanted to introduce OMERO to students, but with this performance a demonstration is impossible and I can't get back to the original good performance speed.
Is this a known issue? and/or do you have any suggestions how to address the problem?

Any help is very much appreciated.
Best,
Jan

Hi Jan,

I'm very please to hear that you've seen some potential in OMERO for your application.

I have to say that my own VirtualBox upgrade didn't alter the performance of my 4.4.6 appliance at all, so I can't suggest a fix for that more than what you've already tried.

Can I suggest that since you saw potential by using the appliance, which is it's main purpose, that you try a full server install on a standalone box? You should get significantly better performance than the virtual appliance if you're installing onto any kind of fairly modern system.

Our detailed installation docs are here: http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/support/omero4/sysadmins/unix/server-installation.html, it's a pretty straight-forward install, and if you have any issues with the process please get in touch and we'll assist if we can.

All the best,

Kenny
