migrating data from old server to new one

Now that I've got an Omero server running on Windows 2008, it's time to attempt to move the users data from the original, "pilot #1" machine (Max OSX 10.8) to the new one. I can't find anything in the server documentation, but is this do-able? I suspect that it's a bit more complicated than just copying over the OMERO/bin directory and the sql database.

Hi Alan,

Great that you got the server instance up and running. Before you do any migration steps, remember to shut down the server (especially when backing up/restoring the DB).

The major steps needed are:
1) Moving of the binary repository (http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/supp ... itory.html) from the OS X machine to Windows
2) Backing up the DB on OS X and moving and restoring it on Windows
optionally 3) Moving any settings from OS X to Windows (LDAP etc.)

An overview of step 2 can be found here: http://www.openmicroscopy.org/site/supp ... g-up-omero

I hope you'll find the links helpful :)

Those were very helpful, thank you bpindelski! I will back up both the binary data directory and the database before moving them, as outlined in those pages. *Excellent*!.

Now....question for anyone... the filesystem on Server #1 is MacOS extended... the filesystem on Server #2 is NTFS. I don't think I can just copy the appropriate files from #1 -> #2, so how might I go about this? Is there any way to get the past 2 months of data from the lab moved over to the new server?

Hi Alan,

It's very positive to see that the documentation has proven helpful. We aim at improving it whenever possible and try to listen to user feedback.

As I understand, you are trying to mount an OS X filesystem (HFS) under Windows. That is doable in a read-only mode and with Apple Boot Camp filesystem drivers installed in the Windows machine. The binary repository of OMERO is filesystem-agnostic, so it's not bound to a specific filesystem. Also the output of the DB backup stage is in a format that will be read by Postgres on any OS.
