"Compression" setting in Insight viewer

Postby dsudar » Mon Jun 30, 2014 7:36 pm

Hi,
There is a taskbar item in Insight's image viewer called "Compression" with choices High, Medium, None. I don't see anything changing when I change the setting. What is the purpose and function of this?
Thanks,
- Damir

My understanding is that it determines how compressed the communication is between client and server for transferring rendered tiles. The idea is that low-speed connections would benefit from a smaller amount of data being transferred, thus greater compression, but for fast connections the overhead of compression is not worthwhile. I would expect that it is for this compression setting that Insight's server dialog at login time allows setting of connection speed. You might notice more difference on slower computers or when connected to the server over wet string, when using the full viewer heavily, for instance panning around in larger images or changing rendering settings. You do suggest the interesting question of if modern computing is now typically sufficiently fast that this compression setting is losing relevance.

Cheers,
Mark
