Image resolution supported by OMERO.web viewer

Postby ravidk » Tue Jul 29, 2014 6:36 pm

Hi All,

Does anyone have any idea what is a good resolution for (in dpi) for a microscopic image and if there is a max resolution that OMERO web viewer can handle.

We are embedding the OMERO.web viewport on to some of our article web pages to view high resolution images and need to set up guidelines and suggest to contributors what range of image resolutions (in dpi) are ideal to make use of the features of the OMERO viewer.

(for example if you are adding a high resolution image of a microscopic image of a cell you would prefer the image to have at least a certain minimum resolution to be able to zoom in deep and have a good view.)
So anyone have any idea what resolution would at least be ideal and then maximum I can go with the Omero viewer.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated
Regards
Ravi K.

Hi Ravi

The web viewer shouldn't have any limitations on the maximum image size/resolution that can be displayed, so for the best results I'd recommend you ask your contributers to upload their original images from the microscope (OMERO can handle most native microscopy file formats) rather than post-processing them. This also has the advantage that all the metadata that's in the image (e.g. microscope settings, pixel size) will be displayed in the viewer. It will also avoid any confusion over DPI, since the image resolution will have been determined by the experimenter in order to get the best image at acquisition time and OMERO will make use of this without any further work.
